Promoting a Dementia-Friendly

Marlborough, Massachusetts

The communities of Marlborough, Northborough and Hudson, Massachusetts are working on an effort called  COME 2 B DEMENTIA FRIENDLY, using the ACT on Alzheimer’s model, developed by an organization in Minnesota* that helps communities take action to make their communities dementia friendly.  The goal is to create a supportive environment for people living with Alzheimer’s, or dementia, and for their families. The Marlborough Action Team, made up of volunteers with various roles in the Marlborough community,  is determining the needs of the community and is developing an Action Plan to provide the resources that the Marlborough community needs to become dementia friendly.

The Marlborough Action Team began by conducting surveys with individuals within eleven (11) sectors** of our city. The surveys asked for individuals’ knowledge and level of interaction with people who have dementia, what resources that they knew were available within our community, what education and training on recognizing dementia was available within their area of work, if they would be interested in helping create a dementia-friendly community, and what additional resources were needed within Marlborough.

The results from the survey formed the foundation of the Action Plan to provide resources the community needs to become dementia friendly. The initial priorities that were indicated by the survey results showed a need for: 1) Awareness of Resources and Organizations, and 2) Education and Training.

This web site to promote a dementia-friendly Marlborough, Massachusetts is the first initiative of the Marlborough Action Team to address the initial priorities. A “Know the 10 Signs” of Alzheimer’s and checklist is included on this web site as well as a “Tips for Business Organizations” and a Resources web site tab.  The Action Team welcomes your comments which you can send in the Contact section.
